Born and educated in Johannesburg, South Africa, Colleen’s approach to her work is influenced by her multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary experiences. Her first career, teaching and research in genetics at the University of the Witwatersrand, honed her people skills and eye for detail. A desire for a lifestyle change resulted in a return to studying at the Calder School of Interior Design, South Africa, and a new career, now 15 years in the making.

Since opening Savannah Designs Inc, Colleen has worked mainly, but not exclusively, on residential projects. The “savannah� in Savannah Designs is a tribute to the open grasslands of Africa – “my mind’s escape-to place when the pace of work is hectic�. Her previous design business in South Africa encompassed both high end residential and small commercial clients. Colleen is an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers. When still resident in South Africa, she was a member of the South African Guild of Interior Designers.

... Great design is about balance and harmony. Both are key to a productive and healthy lifestyle. When designing a client's home I want the result to reflect their taste and style. I incorporate durable finishes and comfortable furnishings along with color and design details that express the personality of the family. Providing ample storage to keep everyone organized is another priority. If one individual element such as color, style or scale is out of balance the space can be physically discomforting. You cannot relax in that room but you're not sure why. You can't relax if your furniture or bedding throws your body out of alignment. If you are spending time trying to find your paperwork, tools or clothing you won't be productive. I work closely with my clients to create an organized, harmonious environment where they can rest, entertain and enjoy life. Having a sanctuary enhances the family's productivity, health and well being.

Offices and work spaces must consider ergonomic design to keep their employees healthy. Absenteeism and poor productivity directly affect the bottom line in any business. Restaurants, theaters, hotels, nursing homes and other public spaces must consider public safety and adhering to building and life safety codes. This concern is in addition to incorporating physical and visual comfort into the design of their environments. Pursuing green design that sustains our natural resources is another obligation. All of these fundamentals must be balanced with the budget and financial management of the project. My goal is to enhance the well-being and productivity of humanity through the powerful influence of great design!
